Why should I have 3D ultrasound?

Before birth, your baby lives in a warm but dark environment endowed by mom. Ultrasound enables the few moments for parents to visit the baby, bringing light, care and love. Thus prenatal images and videos are unparalleled and irreplaceable.

FAQs

2D is two-dimensional and can show the baby sac and heart beat transabdominally as early as 7 weeks. It gives grayscale or black and white images.
3D is three-dimensional and makes the portrait photos that parents would treasure for life. It has a typical golden colour.
4D is 3D in motion over time.
5D consists of the advanced post-processing functions to edit the 3D to achieve the best result. Your baby finally looks pinkish or rosy.
Unlike optical photography, ultrasound uses sound waves rather than visible light to form pictures. You may learn the difference easily online.
Ultrasound can approach your baby from the mom’s front or sides, but never mom’s back, because it’s sound energy at low level and doesn’t penetrate very far. Moreover, diagnostic ultrasound can hardly pass through air. While these features ensure its safety for scanning babies, it means the success in getting a perfect photo is highly dependent on the baby’s position. If the face is not well viewed, we can still watch the baby’s movement, heart beat and gender if requested. Additional appointment may be negotiated and booked for a later date.

Hospitals and clinics don’t do 3D ultrasound because they usually don’t have the automated 3D transducer or camera for this purpose. Using 2D freehand scanning to reconstruct the coronal plane is almost all what they need for diagnosis.

Unlike optical photography, ultrasound doesn’t see the baby from every aspect all together, rather it can only see one section at a time. Unless we focus on the genitalia section by section, we wouldn’t know the gender either by an overall look.

2D ultrasound can tell the intrauterine pregnancy and baby heartbeat as early as 7 weeks transabdominally. Of course 2D ultrasound is good throughout the gestation, forming the basis for all other modes. Gender can be viewed confidently after 18 weeks, but optimally between 18 to 24 weeks. 3D, 4D and hence 5D are best done between 24 to 34 weeks, when the baby becomes chubby but still has adequate amniotic fluid for ultrasound to get the perfect pictures.
